If I had a trade, I would say I’m a lorry driver. But I get impatient with regular jobs and am always on the lookout for something ‘else’.
I was brought up to know that you can do most anything you want if you put your mind to it. I am of the opinion that if its practical, you should have a go at whatever takes your fancy. Annoyingly, the old needing money to live on malarkey does tend to get in the way somewhat, but taking short periods of re-training or time to gain experience, can reinvent your career and get you back on a more interesting or suitable track.
Just some of the directions I have taken:
- Lorry Driver
- Courier Driver
- Store Detective
- IT Tutor
- Estate Agent
- Driving Examiner
- Personal Trainer
- Drummer
- Landlord
- Writer
- Transport Manager
Whilst a list containing ‘Surgeon/Astro Physicist/Actor/Barister’ would have been miles more impressive, these are things that I just wanted to have a go at. To see if this was going to be the career that held my attention.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I’ve been good at all of these. But I’ve given them a proper go. With time, money, training, and often despair!
You see the ‘Writer’ one above? Yep, this is all part of that one. And so far, the time, money and despair is in full force. I will probably fail, but I will give it my full attention and put the effort in.
I am always full of admiration for the people who stay in their chosen career for many years, and become amazing role models for others who want to pursue the same path. That takes real dedication and staying power. And regardless of the amount of effort I put into my endeavours, I still feel that I am often not worthy of the job title I have strived to achieve.
Writers to me are artists. They work exhaustingly at their craft. So please do not think that I take this lightly. I will never be more than a have-a-go writer. But I will give it the effort and respect it deserves.
I hope you can wish me well.
Here we go!
